9 to 9

by Daniel Paul Lawson

/

about

Based on a collection of poems I wrote summer 2010, 9 to 9 is a set of six miniatures, each movement describing a hour between 9 PM and 9 AM.

9 PM
drizzle––
echoes of a muffled din not quite gone.
fog and smoke mask
drab life,
if that is what it is.

11 PM
moonbeams sketch shadows over
streetlights half-out in
silent alleys.
solace is found only
on the stoops of abandoned houses.

1 AM
endless, nearly whispered, invitations.
stretched fabric and skin,
veiling empty caverns
of body and heart.

3 AM
brown bag clinking.
sog––
stumbling––
a sideways sidewalk.
(home?)

6AM
murmurs of pigeons
from the hazy grey––
smeared asphalt and cement––
hooded figures shift with
hurrying men in trench coats.
smog:
a filtered sunrise.

9AM
drones of vibrating hubcaps and angry horns.
arhythmic pulses of footsteps and machinery
accompany humanity through the wrestle,
hustling toward the imminent night.
